Internal Medicine Associates in Lee County has been bought by Millennium Physician Group, one of Southwest Florida’s leading primary medical care offices, the firm said Monday.
In a prepared statement, Kevin Kearns, CEO of Millennium, said, “Millennium and IMA are dedicated to improving the health care of our Southwest Florida communities, and this partnership allows our organizations to combine the talents of our physicians, advanced providers, and care teams to better support our patients and our communities.”
At facilities in North Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and Bonita Springs, IMA provided family and specialized medical services.
According to Millennium, the most immediate impact on patients was the notification that clinics would be closed until July 9 to allow for staff training. Patients who needed medication refills or had other urgent medical requirements should call the office on Monday.
Except on July 4, the EZ Care Clinic, 13813 Metro Parkway, will be operating at varied hours all week. Thursday through Sunday, the North Fort Myers EZ Care Clinic, 3571 Del Prado Blvd. N., will be open.
According to Millennium, the clinic closures coincide with IMA’s transition to a new computer, billing, and phone system. Patients will have access to a new online gateway as well.
Gene Majewski, who worked at a former IMA location in Fort Myers, said he was unaware of the shutdown and was unable to obtain a prescription change because of it.
He described the situation as “chaos.” “You couldn’t get anyone to say anything to you except to call your doctor. You only receive music. I waited 15 minutes for someone to pick up the phone, but no one did.”
A reporter’s call to the IMA headquarters was received by on-hold music for several minutes in all but one example, followed by a suggestion to leave a recorded message.
Patients were advised of the closures, according to Rick Waks, Millennium’s regional chief medical officer.
“Patients will see their doctors and advanced practitioners as usual, with no changes to office phone numbers, appointments, or providers, according to Waks. “In the coming week, patients should expect additional contact in the form of a patient letter.”
Millenium, based in Fort Myers, employed over 1,400 people in primary care clinics, walk-in medical centers, laboratory facilities, and other facilities throughout Florida prior to this merger, including 340 health care providers.
