It’s difficult to find travel insurance when you’re already on the road. We began off as digital nomads with a one-year long-term travel insurance policy, just like many other round-the-world travelers, but unlike them, we continued to travel beyond a year.

We discovered that we were unable to extend our travel insurance, and that new policies required us to be residents of the United Kingdom at the time of purchasing. We didn’t know what to do because we were overseas and went months without insurance—not a smart decision.

Thankfully, we discovered that you can purchase travel insurance once you’ve arrived in a foreign country, whether you failed to do it before leaving or you want to travel for more than a year.

While most businesses do not allow you to get travel insurance after you have left, a few reputable insurers do.

Keep in mind that businesses are not responsible for sending out reminders when it’s time to pay your bill. Some businesses may opt to do so, but this has no bearing on your contractual obligation to pay on the agreed-upon date.
