Did Kobe Have Life Insurance Policy?

Vanessa Bryant is worth $600 million, with the majority of her fortune derived from her late husband’s professional basketball career.

Bryant used to work as a model in high school, but now she spends the majority of her time raising their four girls.

Her name was Vanessa Laine before she married the basketball legend, with the last name borrowed from her stepfather.

Vanessa’s early career as a music video model saw her participate in the music videos of numerous well-known rappers, including Snoop Dogg and Krazy Bones.

She was hired to work on one of Kobe Bryant’s music videos during this time.

The teenage basketball player couldn’t take his gaze away from Vanessa Laine and spoke to her whenever he had the chance.

It didn’t take long for the young pair to fall head over heels in love, and six months after meeting, they were engaged.

Vanessa Bryant was only a senior in high school when she and her boyfriend started dating.

Vanessa Bryant had to finish her high school studies through homeschooling due to the uproar their relationship made at school.

Natalia Bryant, their first daughter, was born to them two years after they married.

The Bryants decided to raise their child and future children by themselves because they wanted their children to have a normal childhood.

Vanessa Bryant was proud of the family she had created, which made the loss of her husband and daughter, who she just learned about through the news, all the more traumatic.

Who got Kobe’s money?

That’s right, you read that correctly. Capri, Kobe Bryant’s 7-month-old daughter, was not included in his projected $600 million estate. The tragic deaths of NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, in January caught everyone off guard. Soon after, little was known about Kobe’s estate planning tactics for his estimated $600 million dollar estate for his wife, Vanessa, and three surviving daughters.

As an Estate Planning attorney, this means Kobe had a solid estate plan – everything was kept secret, not tied up in court, and his family’s quality of life was maintained during this transition period… his plan worked. Then I learned that Capri had been left out of his will.

But didn’t Kobe leave everything to his wife Vanessa?

The contents of Kobe’s trust are confidential since he had one, but here’s what we know based on the trust summary and Probate Court documents:

  • Vanessa and his daughters were given access to the trust’s principle and income throughout Vanessa’s lifetime, with the remainder of the trust estate going to their children after Vanessa’s death.
  • The three elder daughters are named as beneficiaries in the trust, but Capri is not. Capri will not inherit from Kobe’s Trust because she does not have equal rights as a beneficiary.
  • As co-Trustees, Vanessa and Robert Pelinka Jr. have petitioned the Probate Court to alter the Trust.
  • Capri’s eligibility to inherit from Kobe’s Trust will be decided by a Probate Court Judge.

Hopefully, the Probate Court finds that including Capri as a beneficiary of Kobe’s Trust was his intention.

Here’s how you avoid the Court Costs and Public record…

Keep yourself up to date. We check in with our Estate Planning clients once a year and conduct a three-year Estate Plan review to ensure their plan is current. Following births, deaths, divorces, or inheritances, we recommend quickly amending your plan.
