AHN opened new community cancer centers, new emergency rooms at Jefferson Hospital, Saint Vincent Hospital, and Westfield Memorial Hospital, an expanded Level III neonatal intensive care unit at West Penn Hospital, a new GI lab and critical decision unit at Allegheny General Hospital, a new Women and Infants Center at Saint Vincent Hospital, a new perioperative center at Forbes Hospital, and a new Health + Wellness Pavilion in Erie during the course of the year.

What hospitals are AHN?
Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), now the academic flagship of Allegheny Health Network, began as a 50-bed infirmary built in two neighboring brick rowhomes in what was then Allegheny City, just north of Pittsburgh. By the 1870s, Pittsburgh had already erected many hospitals, including West Penn Hospital, to accommodate its increasing population and to care for the victims of fires, floods, and disease outbreaks that frequently swept across the Ohio River’s northern bank. Beginning in 1881, the mayor of Allegheny City met with a committee of physicians and notable Allegheny City residents to explore the construction of a new North Side hospital and fund-raising efforts. Three years later, the committee purchased two adjacent homes at Nova Place on Stockton Avenue.
The hospital was chartered in 1882, and the progenitor to Allegheny General Hospital opened its doors on Feb. 15, 1886. In 1887, the hospital opened a children’s wing, and in 1889, the hospital received a donation of an ambulance, which it would use for the following 64 years. In June 1892, a hospital annex was completed, allowing AGH to expand its surgical capabilities. Around the turn of the century, the hospital’s board of directors began raising funds for a new AGH, which would be built just a block away on Stockton Avenue. The six-story, 400-bed institution opened in 1904 at a cost of $620,000. Separate rooms for urinalysis, blood tests, bacteriology, and autopsies were added to the expanded area, as well as more contemporary laboratory facilities. Within a decade, Dr. Maitland Alexander, the hospital’s board president, persuaded the kin of steel tycoon William H. Singer to establish a new, three-story research facility behind the hospital, which opened in 1916 and became known as the Singer Research Institute (now called the AHN Research Institute). During WWI, AGH was one of the first medical institutions in the country to offer its services to the US Department of War, and in 1918, the AGH Red Cross Unit made its way from Pittsburgh to Bourbonne-les-Bains, France, to staff a French military hospital.
