Why do AmeriCorps pay little?
Fear gripped me as I prepared to graduate college in the spring of 2014, as it did millions of other young people around the country. The worry was especially acute for a social science major whose aim was to one day work for a local non-profit. It felt like a perfect fit when I discovered about AmeriCorps VISTA. VISTA, which was founded in the 1960s, specializes in anti-poverty work and actively seeks out people with minimal professional experience, primarily young college graduates. The goal of the program is to place you as a VISTA in a “year of service,” where you will study at a non-profit or government organization while assisting with the implementation or administration of social projects.
The salary, or lack thereof, is one of the worst aspects of AmeriCorps, if not the worst aspect. The fact that you are paid a stipend rather than a salary is a basic tenet of AmeriCorps. For the opportunity to be a VISTA, you are frequently paid less than minimum wage. According to AmeriCorps, the rationale for this is that you will be working with poor people, and in order to relate to them, you must have gone through the same experience.
This premise, in my opinion, is incorrect in numerous ways. You don’t have to be identical to someone to have empathy for them or advocate for them. Furthermore, I have a sneaking suspicion that our low earnings as VISTAs are due to our government’s unwillingness to appropriately support an important social service program, rather than ideology.
Do student loans go away after 7 years?
After seven years, student loans are not forgiven. After seven years, there is no program for loan remission or cancellation. However, if you recently checked your credit report and wondered, “Why did my student loans vanish?” You have defaulted on your school loans, which is the correct answer.
Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, the three major credit agencies, erase default status and late payments from your credit report seven years after the first missed payment that resulted in the loan defaulting or being charged off.
After their student loans are removed from their credit reports, most borrowers will see an increase in their credit scores the following month. That’s a positive development. However, this does not absolve them of the obligation to repay the debts. You’ll be responsible for the debt until you pay it out, it’s forgiven, or the statute of limitations on private student loans expires.
