How do you become a Landstar carrier?

The following are the minimal requirements for tractor-trailer, expedited, and hotshot owner-operators:

  • One year of OTR experience that can be verified (6 months verifiable OTR experience for Expedited or Hotshot).
  • There have been no criminal convictions in the last seven years. All other felony and misdemeanor charges are dealt with on an individual basis.
  • During your lease with Landstar, provide and maintain appropriate amounts and types of approved insurance, including:
  • Unladen Liability and Occupational Accident coverage, as well as statutory Workers’ Compensation coverage in some situations, are required. You must prove comparable Unladen Liability and/or Occupational Accident coverage through acceptable insurance carriers if you do not engage in Landstar’s Unladen Liability and/or CPP (Occupational Accident insurance) schemes.
  • If you do not participate in the Fleet Workers’ Compensation Plan (FWCP), statutory Workers’ Compensation coverage must be supplied by licensed carriers with adequate interstate coverage.
  • These are minimal operator certification levels that must comply with DOT regulations, and Landstar reserves the right to apply more stricter requirements at its discretion. Landstar will decide whether or not to qualify an operator at its own discretion and on a case-by-case basis.
