Is it expensive to go to the Mayo Clinic?

The cost of each EHP visit is $5,000, which does not include meals, hotel, or flights. However, the show is well-liked: According to Grobart, the number of patients admitted to EHP has increased from 10,887 in 2011 to 17,667 in 2015.

Stephanie Hines, the program’s director, discussed the EHP’s appeal. “Consider the lifestyles of many of these executives,” she continued. “They’re constantly on the road, attending business dinners—not it’s a prescription for regular exercise and a healthy diet. Their visit is intended to assist them in getting back on track.”

In many circumstances, the expense of an executive is covered by the company. It is not only tragic but also costly to lose great talent due to illness or death. An EHP screening can provide reassurance to a corporation that an executive is in good health. In all situations, however, medical information is only sent to an employer with the consent of the patient.

A day full of appointments

Patients in the EHP program check in to a special floor in Mayo Clinic’s main building at 7:30 a.m. on their first day, according to Grobart. Patients are given a little pager and are instructed to meet with a nurse when it beeps.

Patients are screened by a nurse and checked in with a doctor, just like they would for a regular physical. Then things start to become interesting.

According to Grobart, he spent the day seeing several specialists, guided by a Mayo Clinic app that kept track of his appointments, guided him about the health system’s campus, allowed him to speak with personnel, and allowed him to access and email his medical documents as they were updated. Grobart was subjected to a heart stress test, a hearing test, an electrocardiogram, and X-rays over the course of two days. He says, “I saw a cardiologist, a dermatologist, an ophthalmologist, a physical therapist—pretty much all the ‘ists.”

Patients can also spend an extra $10,000 to have their genome sequenced or $3,000 to study how over 250 drugs interact with their bodies genetically. It’s pricy, but according to Grobart, Mayo is working to bring the costs down significantly in the future.

Grobart felt that the program was quite beneficial. He continues, “The convenience of it all—and the relaxing psychological effect of knowing you’re under the watchful eye of a Mayo Clinic physician, who one assumes is a really, very brilliant physician—has a value that’s impossible to define.” “By the end of my appointment, I felt reassured by the care I received and was well informed of the steps I needed to take to maintain my good health” (Grobart, Bloomberg Businessweek, 1/18).
