Mayo Clinic has announced a new network partnership with UnitedHealthcare, which will provide in-network access to Mayo Clinic physicians and hospitals to UnitedHealthcare commercial plan consumers beginning Nov. 1, 2010.
All Mayo group practices and hospitals in Jacksonville, Fla., Scottsdale/Phoenix, Ariz., and Rochester, Minn., are now part of the new network.
“Mayo Clinic president and CEO John Noseworthy, M.D., says, “This national partnership with UnitedHealthcare will allow even more individuals to experience Mayo Clinic.” “Our patients tell us that they come to Mayo because of our collaborative approach to health care, our capacity to uncover answers, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing that they are receiving care from several of the world’s top experts. We are excited to be able to serve UnitedHealthcare’s commercial plan members.”
“Michael O’Boyle, president of UnitedHealth Networks, states, “Mayo Clinic is globally recognized for providing outstanding health care services.” “We look forward to collaborating to give UnitedHealthcare consumers with access to the excellent services provided by Mayo Clinic’s three sites across the United States.”
Mayo Clinic is an in-network provider for millions of individuals, working with UnitedHealthcare and many other insurance providers. Mayo Clinic does not require a physician reference in most circumstances. In fact, more than eight out of ten patients arrive to Mayo Clinic without being referred by another doctor.
Is it expensive to go to the Mayo Clinic?
The cost of each EHP visit is $5,000, which does not include meals, hotel, or flights. However, the show is well-liked: According to Grobart, the number of patients admitted to EHP has increased from 10,887 in 2011 to 17,667 in 2015.
Stephanie Hines, the program’s director, discussed the EHP’s appeal. “Consider the lifestyles of many of these executives,” she continued. “They’re constantly on the road, attending business dinnersnot it’s a prescription for regular exercise and a healthy diet. Their visit is intended to assist them in getting back on track.”
In many circumstances, the expense of an executive is covered by the company. It is not only tragic but also costly to lose great talent due to illness or death. An EHP screening can provide reassurance to a corporation that an executive is in good health. In all situations, however, medical information is only sent to an employer with the consent of the patient.
A day full of appointments
Patients in the EHP program check in to a special floor in Mayo Clinic’s main building at 7:30 a.m. on their first day, according to Grobart. Patients are given a little pager and are instructed to meet with a nurse when it beeps.
Patients are screened by a nurse and checked in with a doctor, just like they would for a regular physical. Then things start to become interesting.
According to Grobart, he spent the day seeing several specialists, guided by a Mayo Clinic app that kept track of his appointments, guided him about the health system’s campus, allowed him to speak with personnel, and allowed him to access and email his medical documents as they were updated. Grobart was subjected to a heart stress test, a hearing test, an electrocardiogram, and X-rays over the course of two days. He says, “I saw a cardiologist, a dermatologist, an ophthalmologist, a physical therapistpretty much all the ‘ists.”
Patients can also spend an extra $10,000 to have their genome sequenced or $3,000 to study how over 250 drugs interact with their bodies genetically. It’s pricy, but according to Grobart, Mayo is working to bring the costs down significantly in the future.
Grobart felt that the program was quite beneficial. He continues, “The convenience of it alland the relaxing psychological effect of knowing you’re under the watchful eye of a Mayo Clinic physician, who one assumes is a really, very brilliant physicianhas a value that’s impossible to define.” “By the end of my appointment, I felt reassured by the care I received and was well informed of the steps I needed to take to maintain my good health” (Grobart, Bloomberg Businessweek, 1/18).
What insurance do most doctors accept?

Primary care physicians accept Medicare at a rate of 93 percent, which is the same as those who accept private insurance.
2 Your sole issue as a Medicare beneficiary will be locating doctors who are willing to accept new patients. Finding a doctor who accepts Medicare should be rather simple (the harder task is deciding on the right doctor). There are three things you may do to assist in the search for a physician:

How Do Doctors Interact with Different Parts Of Medicare?
Once a doctor accepts you as a patient, they are unable to apply Medicare coverage selectively. If you have both Part B and Medigap, for example, your doctor will deal with both.
Your doctor is unable to refuse to deal with some Medicare Regional Offices or Medigap insurance companies. They can’t make up additional fees that push up the cost of Medicare-covered services if they “accept assignment,” which means they agree to the rates set by Medicare.
