More than 67,000 retail pharmacies are part of a nationwide network. Members can pick from two types of pharmacies: Level 1 (lower copay) and Level 2 (higher copay) (higher copay).
The current network is a national network with the same pharmacies but no difference in copays.
Level 1 pharmacies include CVS, Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Kroger, and Costco, among others.
Non-preferred pharmacies such as Walgreens, Rite Aid, and Giant Eagle are included in Level 2.
Walgreens and Walgreens-owned pharmacies are not included in the nationwide network of about 59,000 retail pharmacies.
Most national retailers are included, including CVS, Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Costco, Kroger, and Giant Eagle.
Does Walgreens Take Anthem OTC card?
Effective May 1, 2014, Anthem Blue Cross Medi-Cal is limiting its pharmacy network. This shift could have a big impact on our patients. Here’s some useful information.
- The network will no longer include Walgreens and CVS. Safeway, Target, and a few independent pharmacies are still part of their network.
- A list of their new drugstore network is attached. Please keep in mind that many independent pharmacies operate on a limited schedule.
- In addition, the CBHS Pharmacy and Bay Drug are in the process of being integrated to the network on a priority basis.
- The SFGH pharmacy will be included to the network, although it could take up to a month to complete.
- We’ll email you updated network pharmacy lists as Anthem Blue Cross signs new contracts with more pharmacies.
- In early April, all patients received a letter informing them of the pharmacy network change.
- Last week, a second letter was issued with detailed information on the three nearest pharmacies to the member’s residence.
- About a week before the effective date, Anthem Blue Cross will contact members by phone.
- It’s possible that some members will be unaware of the change. It’s possible that some of our Medi-Cal users will not receive the letter or will be unable to be reached by phone.
- Providers should discuss the new Anthem Blue Cross pharmacy network with patients during clinic visits. Providers should assist patients in finding a new pharmacy if necessary.
- Ensure that all prescriptions are transferred to the new pharmacy. By the end of the week, we’ll have a list of pharmacies near your clinic location.
Anthem Blue Cross advises customers to transfer their prescriptions using one of the following methods:
- contacting their new pharmacy and requesting that their existing pharmacy contact them, or
- Bring all of their medication bottles to the new pharmacy and request that the new pharmacy call their old pharmacy, or
- New prescriptions should be e-mailed or faxed to the new pharmacy, and existing prescriptions should be canceled if necessary.
Call 1-800-407-4627 to talk with an Anthem Customer Service representative:
- The agent has the client’s prescription information as well as a list of nearby in-network pharmacies.
- Assist the client in selecting a pharmacy, then contact the new pharmacy through conference call.
- Provide the member’s medication profile to the new pharmacy. To transfer prescriptions, the new pharmacy will need to contact the previous pharmacy.
All new prescriptions should be sent to a pharmacy that is part of the network. Non-network pharmacies should not be used for new or reordered prescriptions.

UC felt that Anthem would be a better fit as pharmacy benefits administrator for UC’s PPO plans moving forward, despite the fact that UC and OptumRx worked hard to improve member experience and address concerns with enrollment and authorizations.
UC is working with Anthem to finalize implementation specifics, ensuring a smooth transition for PPO members. As soon as further information and answers to your questions become available, they will be emphasized in Open Enrollment materials.
