Can Vytorin cause liver damage?

Vytorin can have both mild and severe adverse effects. Some of the most common side effects that may occur when using Vytorin are listed below. These aren’t all of the probable negative effects.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) keeps track of the side effects of pharmaceuticals it approves. You can use MedWatch to tell the FDA about an adverse effect you’ve experienced while using Vytorin.

Mild side effects

The majority of these adverse effects should subside within a few days or weeks. However, if they worsen or don’t go away, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

* This is only a brief list of Vytorin’s minor side effects. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for further information about other minor side effects, or go to Vytorin’s prescribing information.

Serious side effects

Serious Vytorin side effects are uncommon, although they can happen. If you experience any major side effects, contact your doctor straight once. If your symptoms are life-threatening or you believe you’re having a medical emergency, dial 911 or your local emergency number.

  • Rhabdomyolysis and myopathy (muscle injury) (muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney failure). These disorders can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
  • Myositis or necrotizing myopathy caused by the immune system (an overactive immune system response that leads to muscle cell death). These disorders can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

* See “Negative effect details” below for further information on these side effects.

Side effects in children

Vytorin is safe to use in children over the age of ten. Vytorin’s side effects in children aged 10 and up are comparable to those in adults, as stated above and below.

Allergic reaction

Vytorin, like most other medicines, can cause adverse reactions in certain people.

During clinical trials of Vytorin, no allergic responses were reported. However, since the drug’s introduction to the market, adverse responses have been observed. It’s unclear how frequently this side effect occurs among Vytorin users.

It’s unlikely that you’ll have a more severe allergic reaction, but it’s conceivable. A strong allergic reaction might cause the following symptoms:

If you experience an allergic reaction to Vytorin, contact your doctor straight away because the reaction could be serious. If your symptoms are life-threatening or you believe you’re having a medical emergency, dial 911 or your local emergency number.

Muscle pain

In several clinical trials, participants were given either Vytorin or a placebo for about 7 months. (A placebo is a medication that contains no active ingredient.) Muscle soreness was found in these investigations in:

Myopathy can cause muscle soreness and weakening as a symptom (muscle damage). All statin medicines, including simvastatin, have a documented adverse effect of myopathy (one of the active drugs in Vytorin).

While taking Vytorin, your risk of muscular soreness or myopathy is highest during the first year of treatment. However, as you continue to take the medicine after the first year, your risk of these adverse effects decreases. Myopathy was found in the following people in a long-term clinical study:

Lower doses of Vytorin are more likely to induce muscular injury than higher ones, notably Vytorin 10 mg/80 mg*. While using Vytorin, certain persons are at an increased risk of muscle injury. See the for more information “See the “Vytorin Precautions” section below for more information.

If you combine Vytorin with some other medications, you’re more likely to develop muscle difficulties. Look into it “To understand more about this, see the “Vytorin Interactions” section below.

Note: Muscle discomfort and weakness could be indicators of immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, a significant adverse effect of Vytorin. This is an excessive immune response that results in the loss of muscle cells. Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy, which includes simvastatin, is a rare adverse effect of statin medicines (one of the active drugs in Vytorin). See the list below for a complete list of other symptoms that may occur as a result of this side effect “Above is a list of “serious side effects.”

If you have any unusual muscle discomfort, tenderness, or weakness while taking Vytorin, contact your doctor straight once.

It’s especially critical to contact your doctor immediately away if you’re experiencing muscle pain in addition to other symptoms. Muscle pain that is accompanied by other symptoms, such as fever, can be a sign of a more dangerous side effect known as rhabdomyolysis. (See the rhabdomyolysis page for more information.) “(See the list of “serious side effects” above.)

A creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) blood test may be recommended if you develop muscle difficulties while using Vytorin. CPK is a type of enzyme (protein) that aids in muscle function. CPK levels that are too high can indicate muscular injury. If you have a high CPK or other muscular damage signs, your doctor would usually advise you to discontinue taking Vytorin.

When you stop using Vytorin, muscle discomfort and weakness normally go away. However, if these effects persist after you stop taking Vytorin, consult your doctor.

Increased liver enzymes

Vytorin may cause an increase in liver enzymes as a side effect. And it’s possible that this is a symptom of liver damage.

Liver enzymes are proteins that aid in the proper functioning of the liver. Vytorin can cause liver damage in certain people. Liver enzymes can also seep into your bloodstream if cells in your liver are destroyed. Increased liver enzymes are detected in blood tests known as liver function tests. The majority of the time, elevated liver enzymes have no symptoms.

Increased liver enzymes were seen in 1.7 percent to 1.8 percent of persons who took Vytorin for up to a year in clinical investigations. It’s unclear how frequently this side event happened in persons who received a placebo in these investigations. (A placebo is a medication that contains no active ingredient.)

Your liver enzymes will usually return to normal while you continue to use Vytorin. Increased liver enzymes, on the other hand, might sometimes be a symptom of more significant liver disease.

Your doctor will arrange liver function tests to assess your liver enzyme levels before you start taking Vytorin. During your Vytorin medication, you may be subjected to liver function tests.

If you experience any indications of liver damage while taking Vytorin, contact your doctor straight away. These signs and symptoms could include:

Your doctor will prescribe liver function tests to assess your liver enzymes if you experience any of these symptoms. If the tests reveal that you have a liver condition, your doctor would likely advise you to stop taking Vytorin.

Alopecia

While taking Vytorin, some persons may experience alopecia (hair loss or thinning). However, it’s unclear how common this adverse effect is with Vytorin.

Alopecia was not documented in Vytorin clinical trials. Alopecia has been recorded in some Vytorin users since the medicine was approved and put on the market. Since the introduction of these medicines, alopecia has been documented in persons taking simvastatin and ezetimibe. (The active ingredients in Vytorin are simvastatin and ezetimibe.) However, it’s unclear how many people developed alopecia while taking these medicines.

Consult your doctor if you’re concerned about hair loss or thinning while taking Vytorin.

Memory loss

While taking Vytorin, you may experience memory loss. However, the frequency with which this side effect may occur with the medicine is unknown.

Vytorin has not been linked to memory loss in clinical trials. However, one of the active ingredients of Vytorin, simvastatin, is a statin. Memory issues have also been described as an adverse effect of simvastatin and other statin medicines.

Memory issues have developed in some people just a few days after starting a statin medicine. Memory issues have also developed in persons who have been taking statin drugs for years. After ceasing statin treatment, most memory difficulties improve within a few weeks.

Consult your doctor if you experience memory issues while taking Vytorin. They can advise you to try an alternative treatment.

Depression

While taking Vytorin, some people may experience depression. However, the frequency with which this side effect may occur with the medicine is unknown.

Clinical trials of Vytorin found no evidence of depression. However, it has been recorded in a small number of persons who have taken Vytorin since it was approved and put on the market. Since the introduction of these medicines, depression has been recorded in persons taking simvastatin and ezetimibe. (The active ingredients in Vytorin are simvastatin and ezetimibe.) However, it’s unclear how many people have acquired depression while using these medications.

Consult your doctor if you’re worried about depression while taking Vytorin. Also, if you develop depression symptoms while taking Vytorin, contact your doctor straight once.

Is simvastatin the same as Vytorin?

Simvastatin (Zocor) is present in Vytorin, and a number of medicines prevent simvastatin from being eliminated by the liver. Reduced simvastatin elimination could raise simvastatin levels in the body, increasing the risk of simvastatin muscle toxicity. Vytorin should not be taken with any medications that slow down its removal. These medications include erythromycin (E-Mycin), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), clarithromycin (Biaxin), telithromycin (Ketek), cyclosporine (Sandimmune), nefazodone (Serzone), boceprevir (Victrelis), telaprevir (incivek), voriconazole (Vfend), posa (Norvir).

Large amounts of grape fruit juice (>1 quart daily) will similarly raise simvastatin levels in the blood and should be avoided.

When used with simvastatin, amiodarone (Cordarone), verapamil (Calan Verelan, Isoptin), diltiazem, amlodipine (Norvasc), danazol (Danocrine), ranolazine (Ranexa), cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral), niacin (Niacor, Niaspan, Slo-Niacin), gemfibro

Patients on amiodarone, amlodipine, or ranolazine should not take more than 10/20 mg of Vytorin per day, and those taking verapamil or diltiazem should not take more than 10/10 mg.

Simvastatin boosts the effects of warfarin (Coumadin) and digoxin levels in the blood (Lanoxin). Patients who use simvastatin, warfarin, or digoxin should be closely watched. Cholestyramine (Questran) inhibits ezetimibe absorption, hence Vytorin should be taken two hours before or four hours after cholestyramine.

Patients who take more than 1 gram of niacin per day in combination with 40 mg of simvastatin have a higher risk of muscle-related adverse effects. As a result, these patients should not take Vytorin 10/80 mg in combination with niacin levels exceeding 1 gram per day. Other Vytorin doses should be used with caution when coupled with 1 gram of niacin daily.

When should Vytorin be taken?

Once a day, in the evening, VYTORIN should be taken. When the body is at rest and when there is no nutritional intake, the liver produces the most cholesterol. The majority of people do this at night when they are sleeping. As a result, taking VYTORIN in the evening is more effective.

What is Vytorin prescribed for?

This drug is used in conjunction with a healthy diet to help lower “bad” cholesterol and fats (such as LDL and triglycerides) while increasing “good” cholesterol (HDL). Ezetimibe works by lowering the amount of cholesterol absorbed by your body from food. Simvastatin is a member of the “statin” class of medicines. It works by lowering the amount of cholesterol the liver produces. Other lifestyle changes that may help this drug work better include exercising, decreasing weight if overweight, and quitting smoking, in addition to eating a good diet (such as a low-cholesterol/low-fat diet). For more information, talk to your doctor. Lowering “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing “good” cholesterol helps to avoid heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks.
