Is travel insurance worth getting?

Though travel insurance may cost 5 to 10% of your trip cost, it is typically well worth the money because it can reimburse you for hundreds of thousands of dollars in covered travel-related charges such as emergency evacuation, medical bills, and trip cancellation and interruption costs.

STA Travel was a member of the Association of British Travel Agents, which claims that the majority of the trips it sold were packages that included flights. These are covered by the Civil Aviation Authority’s ATOL system, which ensures that clients will receive a refund if their flights are canceled.

What has happened to STA Travel?

On August 21, 2020, and September 25, 2020, respectively, Jason Tracy and Tim Norman were appointed Joint and Several Administrators and then Joint and Several Liquidators of the Company.

STA Travel is no longer in operation, and all of its employees have been laid off.

We understand that people who have been affected by the Company’s demise are going through a stressful and difficult time. We also recognize that thousands of customers are looking for answers regarding how they may be affected directly. Customers who have specific questions about the status of their booking will be unable to contact the Liquidators.

Customers should contact travel providers directly if they had a reservation as of August 21, 2020. COVID-19 is having a severe impact on the leisure, tourist, and hospitality industries, with many travel operators working at reduced capacity, causing delays in customer service and refund processing (where applicable).

Customers are encouraged to read our Notice to Customers – Update 3 dated October 28, 2020 (copy below), which provides a summary of the three broad categories of customer claims and the possibility of customer funds not being refunded in whole.

To assist customers with their inquiries, the Notice also includes the following materials (available for download as separate attachments):

  • Prior to August 21, 2020, STA Travel was facilitating refunds that had been requested by clients and were being facilitated by the travel providers (date of the appointment of the Voluntary Administrators)
  • Customer bookings that existed on August 21, 2020 and for which a refund had not been requested and was not being arranged by STA Travel.
  • Customers who have a credit note, a STA Travel crisis recovery voucher, or a STA Travel gift card, or who have had travel provider reimbursements deposited with STA Travel prior to the appointment of Administrators.

Please remember that we only have authority over Australian-based enterprises, not the entire STA Travel international company.

Please read the terms and conditions on any contact or booking information you receive from a STA Travel international group firm, as you may have a claim against a company in the STA Travel international group that we do not control. In this case, we recommend that you contact the appropriate entity.

What happens if travel agent goes bust?

Step 1: If you’re still in the UK, double-check your reservation. If a component of your vacation, such as an airline, fails, the tour operator should handle it for you. If the tour operator goes out of business, your vacation will most likely be canceled, and you will need to file a claim with the travel association.

What is not covered by travel insurance?

Baggage delay, damage, and loss plans do not cover all of your belongings. Glasses, hearing aids, dental bridges, tickets, passports, keys, cash, and cell phones are all common travel insurance exclusions. These things are sometimes covered, but only up to a particular cost limit, so if you have several expensive electronic items (such as a laptop, tablet, and mobile phone), you may not have enough coverage to cover the loss of all of them.

How much should you pay for travel insurance?

Because travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all, the cost and terms of a plan will differ. However, knowing pricing principles might help you plan your travel insurance purchase.

In general, a plan should cost between 4% and 10% of your entire pre-paid, non-refundable travel cost. For example, if you paid $5,000 for a vacation, the travel insurance coverage accessible to you will likely cost between $250 and $500, depending on the conditions.
