Is chocolate bad for dogs?
So, if you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, what should you do? There are a few options available to you. To assess if your dog is likely to show symptoms, use an internet calculator (like this one) or call animal poison control (1-888-426-4435 in Canada and the U.S.). Keeping in mind that such sites are not a substitute for veterinary treatment, you should keep a close eye on your dog regardless of what they say, searching for symptoms such as a racing heart, vomiting, or tremors.
If your dog ate an unknown amount of chocolate, has symptoms, is pregnant (theobromine can penetrate the placenta and impact the puppy), or has other health issues, you should take them to the vet immediately once. Although symptoms may not appear for up to two hours after eating, veterinary anti-chocolate therapies are most effective when administered as soon as feasible.
And how do they treat a dog who has been poisoned by theobromine? Decontamination of the stomach. The first step is to make sure your stomach is empty (if the ingestion was recent enough). This is frequently done with apomorphine, a medication that is delivered through the eye and immediately absorbed.
Activated charcoal, a finely powdered material capable of binding a range of medications and chemicals, will next be administered by a veterinarian. Activated charcoal is most effective when given soon after a poison has been ingested, and it is commonly given by combining it with wet dog food (warning: it will colour your dog’s excrement black). Repeated charcoal administrations may be required in certain circumstances, but in others, a single dosage will suffice.
A theobromine-poisoned dog will only be given drugs to control their specific symptoms after these procedures, such as Diazepam for seizures or hyperexcitability, beta blockers for fast heart rate, Atropine for low heart rate, or others.
Cats, it turns out, are more sensitive to theobromine poisoning than dogs, yet we’ve never heard of a cat being ill after eating chocolate. What is the reason for this?
The reason for this is that cats do not eat as indiscriminately as dogs do. Dogs are known for eating anything they can get their hands on (even joint butts, which puts them at danger of cannabis poisoning), whereas cats are known for being fastidious eaters. The fact that cats lack the ability to taste glucose helps to explain this.
You probably wouldn’t eat much chocolate if it tasted like 100 percent dark chocolate.
- Chocolate is harmful to dogs mostly due to theobromine, which canines are unable to adequately digest.
- The amount of chocolate a dog may consume without becoming ill varies greatly depending on their weight.
- If your dog consumes chocolate, you should keep a close eye on them and seek veterinarian help if they exhibit any symptoms, or if they are extremely young, pregnant, or have other health issues.
