Sentara Healthcare was incorporated in 1972 as a business, but its roots trace back to 1888. In Norfolk, Virginia, the Norfolk Women’s Christian Association established the Retreat for the Sick, a 25-bed hospital. The hospital was renamed the Norfolk Protestant Hospital ten years after its founding. The Norfolk General Hospital was given a new name in 1936.
In 1967, Norfolk General Hospital performed the region’s first successful open-heart surgery. Dr. Southgate Leigh founded another Norfolk hospital, the Sarah Leigh Hospital, in 1903, with 35 beds. The Leigh Hospital was a cutting-edge building with rounded corners, a fire suppression system, and basic air handling at the time.
