What is my excess?
A policy excess is the portion of the total claim costs that you must pay out of pocket, and it is normally between £100 and £500. You can choose to pay a greater excess in exchange for cheaper insurance, or a more expensive policy can mean paying a lower excess, but this will all be discussed when you purchase your policy. While automobiles and other technologies have advanced significantly, the AA is still dealing with the same concerns that afflicted motorists in 1910, one hundred years after its founding at College Green.
To this day, potholes, sign posting, unjust taxes, speed restrictions, permits, and car theft are all on the AA’s agenda.
The AA was founded in Ireland in 1910 at No. 12 College Green in Dublin’s city center. There were three distinct goals from the start:
To establish a warning and directing sign system that was nearly non-existent.
The AA placed the first warning and directing signs in Ireland for free, demonstrating a generous and foresighted dedication to the Irish motorist. 4,000 signs had been put in Ireland within a year of the Association’s founding, with many more planned.
Signposting would take up a large portion of the AA’s time in Ireland for the next forty years and beyond. Ireland has progressed from a terrible start to become one of Europe’s best-signposted countries. Many of the original signs are still up, which is a proud heritage for the Association.
In 1922, the Irish Free State was formed, breaking practically all links with the United Kingdom. The AA began issuing customs documents for automobiles entering and exiting the country at that time. This was a big duty, and it was a big component of the Association’s activity for a long time.
The backstory underlying the charming ‘AA Salute’ is fascinating. Low speed restrictions were implemented in the early years of automobile, along with speed traps to enforce them. The AA informed its members that their Patrols will salute cars with AA badges displayed to alert them of impending speed traps. Authorities became enraged and declared this to be illegal, ordering them to cease. “All right, we hereby notify our Members that their cars will always be saluted unless there is a speed trap ahead,” the AA added. Years passed before the tradition died off.
The first AA Patrols arrived in Ireland in the mid-1920s. The country’s initial motorcycle rescue service, the yellow and black combo motorcycles, were the forerunners of today’s contemporary fleet. The Patrols would literally go along a route looking for any AA members who were in distress or in need of assistance. The Patrols practically carried their tools on their bicycles on several routes. By the end of the 1920s, the whole fleet had been mechanized.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, a transition to a more modern era occurred. In the Dublin area, the Radio Controlled Breakdown Service was inaugurated in 1956. The stranded motorist no longer had to rely on flagging down a Patrol. They might now be called and told where to go.
The Patrol Force was extensively reorganized in 1966. Motorcycles were phased out in favor of more fuel-efficient minivans, and Radio Control Centres were constructed in Cork and other cities to cover the entire country.
The AA was transforming into the cutting-edge roadside assistance organization it is today.
In 1977, AA Ireland entered the Irish general insurance market, which led to the establishment of vehicle and home insurance services.
AA Ireland now has over 100,000 vehicle insurance clients and 50,000 home insurance customers in Ireland.
